u11 Match Reports 2008/09

8/3/2009 v ASC Strikers 4-0
A championship winning performance by the boys today. From the early 4th minute goal by Tom following a through pass by Thomas we took control and played some great football in to a strong wind. Jack had to make a great save just before Tom put us 2-0 with a header from Max's corner in the 29th minute. The message at half time was to keep pushing forward and within 10 seconds of the kick off Tom laid the ball to Max who passed back to James who chipped it forward for Tom to run through and get his hat trick. Some good defending at the back from Ben and Bradley kept their forwards quiet. Max had a golden chance to put us 4-0 after being put in by Tom following a good ball by Simon but scuffed his shot. Everyone was playing their part in a good team performance and despite some tough tackles from their defenders we battled through. James scored the 4th with five minutes to go direct from a free kick after a bad foul on George. This allowed us to get all the boys on for a run out before the final whistle sparked off some great well deserved celebrations. Man of the Match went to Tom but again it was the team that were the winners. Congratulations to all concerned for winning the league.

1/3/2009 v Hove Park Colts 1-1
The team performance today was outstanding. Effort, workrate, concentration and belief all things we spoke about before the game were put into place. It was always going to be a tight game and we were delighted when Jacob scored the first goal after 25 mins following some great passing. Unfortunately a bad injury to Joe G enforced us to make changes and just switching off concentration for a well delivered free kick saw them get the equaliser three minutes later. Both teams tried to get the all important winner and had chances in the second half. Some great defending by our boys kept them out and we were unlucky at the other end. I havent given a man of the match today as so many could have been up for it.

22/2/2009 v Adur Athletic 3-1
After Tom scored in 30 seconds we really should have run out a cricket score but instead we didn't play at all well and everyone thought it would be easy. We were guilty of too many touches on the ball in and around the box, a missed penalty and some great defending by Adur shut us out. Jacob put us 2 up just before half time. However the second half showed no improvement in our game and despite Bradley putting us 3-0 up Adur rallied to get one back. George picked up top marks today in what was a poor overall team performance. 3 points gratefully accepted but to win this league we will need to drastically improve on that performance in our last two games.

15/2/2009 v Southwick Rangers 7-0
We took control very early today going two up in the first 5 minutes, this allowed us to settle into a rhythm and the rest of the game turned into a formality. Being 5-0 up at half time with 2 Goals for Jack and one each for James, Michael and Max. Jacob came on as a second half sub and scored two more to let us run out as 7-0 winners. We had numerous opportunities for others to score but missed some glorious chances.
We lost Max early in the second half to a bad tackle and readjusted the formation to 3 - 5 -2. Todd got man of the match, but Thomas with one his best games this season pushed him close, there were other good performances all round with the squad pushed to the limit on numbers. For the second week running Joe R went close with a good strike near the end. Just as pleasing was yet another clean sheet for Matt and the defence.

8/2/2009 v Patcham United Black 7-0
We took a while to get going today with Patcham having much of the play at the start. Once we got the first goal we took control and pushed on to get the second before half time. A shake up in the second half saw us play 90% in their half of the pitch and some better football was played with us scoring 5 more. James scored three very good goals to get his hat trick, Tom worked hard for his 2 and Max with 2 great strikes also bagged a couple. Bradley got man of the match for a good all round display. Matt was not really troubled in goal and what he had to deal with he did well. Joe R went close with a great volley from the edge of the box near the end which went over the bar. Their keeper was easily their man of the match as he kept the score down to single figures with some fine saves.

1/2/2009 v Seagulls Club 9-2
In a full scale blizzard we totally outplayed Seagulls in the first half cruising to a 7-0 half time lead playing some outstanding football. A great diving header by Tom from a good cross from Bradley set us on our way. Goals followed from James, Bradley, Max and 3 more from Tom before the end of the first half. This allowed us to make changes in the second half and get everyone a run out in the ever freezing conditions. Despite a spirited second half from the opposition who scored twice, Bradley and Tom, with our 100th goal of the season and one of the best build up goals we have scored, finished them off with a 9-2 win. Jack looked in control in goal and again his kicking gets better each game. In what was a good all round team performance Max shaded the man of the match but Tom with his 5 goals and Joe G at the back pushed him very close.

25/01/2009 cup v Hastings Town Youth 5-5 aet (lost 6-5 on pens)
The weather once again was awful and it was a long journey but what a cup game we have witnessed today. Apart from the goal drama it was end to end football and both teams had chances to win in normal time. The boys put their hearts and souls into it and should be proud of themselves but unfortunately one team has to go out. I feel that this is the best team we have played so far this season.

The scoring went as follows: 1 up - 1- 3 down - 2-3 at half time - 3-3 after the break, 3-4 down back to 4-4 and into extra time - 4-5 down back to 5-5 and on to the lottery of penalties: 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, 2-1, 3-1, 3-2, 3-2, 3-3, 4-3, 4-4 to sudden death 4-4, 4-4, 5-4, 5-5, 5-5, 5-5, 5-6.

Scorers today were Tom with a hat trick, one for James and a belter from George in extra time to take us to penalties. Jack made some great saves to keep us in it during the game and penalties and edged the top score ratings today.

18/01/2009 v AFC Brighton & Hove 5-0
A welcome return to playing football on a Sunday saw us overcome strong winds to come out 5-0 winners. We did look a bit rusty and were a bit kick and rush in the first half, but never looked in danger. James scored after 5 minutes and with the game virtually played in their half we couldn't increase the lead. A change of formation in the second half and playing with the wind behind us we cruised out with four more goals in the second half, Tom getting 2 good solo goals and James completing his hat trick with a penalty and a good strike from the edge of the box. James was voted man of the match.

7/12/08 v Fishersgate Flyers 3-2
A tremendous fight back from the boys today who had to come back from being behind twice. Conceding a goal in the first five minutes that left Jack helpless from a shot that took a deflection high over his head. We had chances to draw level but came in at half time behind. We needed to compete harder in the second half. With dubious decisions going against us and bad luck in front of goal it seemed that whatever we did was not going to be good enough. With 10 minutes to go we were awarded a penalty after a push in the box, James stepped up and equalised. Within two minutes we were behind again after a defensive mix up saw Charles dribbling the ball in to his own net. Making amends "John Terry" style Charles then got on the end of a goalmouth scramble and forced the ball over the line. With only a few minutes left Bradley got us a well earned winner. Win lose or draw today the boys made us proud for not giving in up to the final whistle. George was given man of match but everyone deserved equal praise today.

30/11/08 v Withdean Youth 2-0(cup)
A really good professional performance today by the boys on a sticky pitch. We seem to relish the challenge of playing against better opposition and stepped up to the mark again today. Our passing , tackling and movement in all positions was really good and every player contributed in a real team effort. James scored the first after 5 minutes and Tom scored a fine individual goal with 15 minutes to go. Bradley was voted man of the match but the whole team deserve high praise for getting us through to the last 8 of the cup.

23/11/2008 v Hove Rivervale 5-1
It seems that the weather gods are against us on Sundays, torrential rain, freezing temperatures and a soggy pitch made for tough playing conditions. Hove Rivervale played the better football throughout but we capitalised on their weakness of not getting the ball out from the back. 2 good strikes from outside the box from James put us two up at half time. A strong half time team talk demanded more effort and better football, in spite of the conditions, from the whole team. A good shot from Tom put us 3 up but then we let them back into the game by conceding a soft goal. Good link up play between James and Bradley saw Bradley lob the keeper for the fourth. Joe G scoring a good goal in the final minute completing a 5-1 win. Jack did not have much to do shot stopping wise but again his distribution is improving game on game. James got man of the match closely followed by Ben.

16/11/2008 v Adur Athletic 6-2
We overcame a bumpy pitch, physical opposition and some missed chances to come out comfortable winners. Playing good football in patches we were always in control but couldn't really put the game out of reach but never looked in danger. Two goals each for Tom and Bradley with James and Simon getting the others. Ben was voted man of the match for a competent display.

9/11/2008 v Southwick Rangers 13-0
A great all round performance once again with many good individual displays. The passing and movement was at times top rate. Jack's drop kicking was very good and caused their defence problems whilst our defence were solid throughout the game. The midfield was very creative and the forwards had good movement. There were some great goals scored today and the goalscorers were Max 4, Bradley 3, James 2, Tom, Simon, Ben and Willis with a header! Joe G was voted man of the match having played consistently well in three defensive positions left, right and centre back. It was good to get everyone a game and even changing positions didn't affect us.

2/11/2008 v Seagulls Club 3-2
This was always going to be a tight game, keenly and fairly competed and so it proved probably too close for comfort. In the first half Tom looked dangerous for us down the right and got clean through a couple of times down the wing and when we went ahead just before the break from Thomas's through ball it was once again Tom's pace getting past the defenders to score with a minute to go before half time. Max got the important second 7 minutes after the break. Then for some reason we stopped playing and gave them two gifted goals to get them back into the game. A tense finsh saw us need to up the work rate and pressure to finally see Tom score a great goal from Jacob's cross with 2 minutes left. Tom was voted Man of the Match.

26/10/2008 V AFC Brighton & Hove 11-0
Another solid display of pass and move football of a high quality. When the opposition come up after the game and congratulate the team on outstanding play it speaks volumes. Goals from Jacob on 10 mins as an opener was followed by two each for James, Bradley, Simon one a great turn and shot from outside the area just before half time and Max, with the other goals by Thomas a screamer from outside the box and Jack scoring straight from their goal kick. Matt's distribution was very good, Ben, Ollie,Todd and George defensively were not troubled too much but when we played the ball out from the back with some great passing it looked class. but man of the match went to Simon and each week is proving to be a hard decision.

19/10/2008 Dean Valley Youth 6-0 (cup)
We expected and got a tough encounter against Dean Valley who were very physical on a small tight pitch. Once we scored the first after 10 minutes we took control and went in 5-0 up at half time. The second half saw a more even game but remaining in control we cruised and bruised to a 6-0 win. A very pleasing three headed goals from James, Max and Michael from good crosses from Tom, with Bradley Simon and another from Max completing the honours. Bradley was man of the match with other good performances throughout the team and another clean sheet for Jack.

12/10/2008 v Hove Park Colts 1-0
In a close and exciting game we played our hearts out and fully deserved to come away with all the points. Jack had to make some outstanding saves in the first half to keep us in the game. We did not fold to their intimidating style and despite having to make early substitutions both Joe G and Michael came on down the left and did not disappoint. Tom broke clean through but didn't get his shot away early enough and missed a good opportunity to give us the lead. Getting to half time 0-0 we were pleased for the break and re-organise. The second half started as the first one ended chances at both ends with James missing a golden chance and Tom going close. Bradley and Ben were superb at centre backs and both Max and George in the midfield were winning tackles and headers all over the pitch. Thomas was solid at right back and rarely wasted the ball, Simon did a great man marking job on George Cox and marked him out of the game. Finally we broke away with 5 minutes to go and Tom again bursting through with his pace just got the final touch to get the winner. Leaving us only 5 mins to go we needed Bradley, George and Joe G to all make timely defensive interceptions. Well done boys today you really stepped up to the plate

5/10/2008 v Patcham United Black 12-0
A comprehensive victory in torrential rain and gale force winds saw us score 6 goals in under 13 minutes. A 11 minute hat trick from James was followed by hat tricks by Tom and a second half hat trick by Ben. An acrobatic birthday goal from Max a deserved goal from George but my favourite was Bradley's first half goal from a quickly taken free kick by James sending Bradley through to beat the keeper with a low drive. George was voted man of the match and again a couple of others went close. We now need to show this form against better teams.

28/9/2008 ASC Strikers 1-3
A disappointing result where we were poor defensively and couldn't cope with their pace on the flanks. Two sloppy errors saw us go in 2 down at half time. We rallied to get back into the game with a penalty converted by James and saw two other chances hit the woodwork from James and Thomas. Then a poor third goal was conceded by letting their centre forward run from the half way line without a challenge. Tom was voted man of the match closely followed by Ben and James.

21/9/2008 v Sovereign Saints Red 10-0 (cup)
A comprehensive victory in the first round of the cup saw us play some great football which overwhelmed the opposition. It took 10 minutes before James got the first of his 4 goals, 2 from Max, Bradley, Jacob, Ben and Tom also all got on the score sheet. Man of Match went to Tom but again there were a lot of players who deserved it.

14/9/2008 v Fishersgate Flyers 2-0
A hard fought victory came after a scoreless first half with us dominating most of the play but missing good chances. Our stronger fitness showed in the second half as we put more pressure on their defence. James scored twice with the second a great solo effort following their goal kick, controlling the ball on his chest and taking on two players before tapping the ball home. Jack needed to be alert and did well on a one on one to block a shot with his legs. Ben was voted man of the match for a good all round display, but Todd or James could have been in with a shout.

7/9/2008 v Hove Rivervale 6-1
First game of the season saw us play some great football and control the game all over the pitch. We looked comfortable and after scoring in the 5th minute finally running out winners 6-1. Goals scored James 2 including a great free kick, Max, Tom, Simon and Willis. Man of the match Simon.
